About Aguieira Dam

Aguieira dam is the main reservoir on the river Mondego in central Portugal, completed in 1981 as part of a comprehensive flood control and water management scheme for the Mondego valley. The double-curvature arch dam stands 89 metres tall and holds 423 million cubic metres. Before the dam's construction, the city of Coimbra and the lower Mondego valley suffered severe flooding. The reservoir now regulates the river's flow, provides hydroelectric power, and supplies irrigation water to the rice paddies and farmland of the lower Mondego. The lake is popular for water sports and recreational fishing, located in a landscape of pine-covered hills near the Serra da Estrela mountain range.
